Atlanta, Georgia - Defending champions Argentina got their Copa America title defense off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Canada at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Thursday. After a goalless first half, Lautaro MartÃnez broke the deadlock in the 65th minute courtesy of a beautiful Lionel Messi assist.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Argentina was unable to extend their lead until the closing stages. In the 88th minute, Messi played a perfectly weighted pass to Lautaro, who coolly slotted the ball into the net to seal the victory for Argentina.
The victory puts Argentina at the top of Group A, level on points with Paraguay, who drew their opening match against Uruguay. Argentina will face Paraguay in their next match on Monday, June 13th, while Canada will take on Uruguay.
