President Russell M. Nelson, the leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, September 9, 2023. Nelson is the oldest living prophet in the LDS Church's history and the 17th president of the faith.

Early Life and Education

Russell Marion Nelson was born on September 9, 1924, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the youngest of nine children born to Marion C. and Edna Anderson Nelson. His father was a physician and his mother was a nurse. Nelson attended the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a medical degree.

Medical Career

After graduating from medical school, Nelson served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then returned to the University of Utah, where he completed a residency in thoracic surgery. Nelson became a world-renowned heart surgeon and performed the first open-heart surgery in Utah in 1955.

Church Service

In 1964, Nelson was called to serve as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the second-highest governing body in the LDS Church. He served in this capacity for 34 years, during which time he traveled extensively and dedicated dozens of temples around the world.

Prophet and President

In 2018, Nelson became the president of the LDS Church, succeeding Thomas S. Monson. As president, Nelson has emphasized the importance of missionary work, temple worship, and personal revelation. He has also introduced several changes to the church's policies and procedures.

Personal Life

Nelson married Dantzel White in 1945. They had 10 children together. Dantzel passed away in 2005. In 2006, Nelson married Wendy Watson.
